-
Mowing
Mow at the high end of 3 to 4 inches.
OSU says higher mowing in summer keeps the soil cooler and holds moisture. Don't mow a lawn that is drought stressed, and keep traffic off it. [1]
-
Grubs and weeds
Preventive grub products, only if you've had grub damage.
Imidacloprid or thiamethoxam are effective preventives from June through August, and chlorantraniliprole through July. Timing matters: OSU notes imidacloprid lasts up to 8 weeks, so an application before mid-June may wear off before August grubs hatch. [5][6]
-
Watering
Water when grass wilts, before 9 a.m., deeply.
OSU's fact sheet suggests about 1 inch of water a week, enough to wet the top 6 to 8 inches of soil. OSU's turf team now suggests waiting until you see wilting, then watering the next morning, typically no more than two or three times a week. Many sprinklers put down more than an inch an hour, but some Ohio soils can take in only about a tenth of an inch an hour, so split long waterings into shorter cycles. [7][8][9]

Seeding
Wait for late August.
The main seeding season runs from late August into October. [2]
-
Fertilizer
Skip it.
OSU does not recommend fertilizing homeowner lawns in the heat of summer. [3]
-
Crabgrass and pre-emergents
Note where crabgrass shows up.
Preventer season is over. Mark the trouble spots so you know where to focus next April. [4]
-
Leaves and winter care
Nothing to do.
No leaf or winter work this month.
