Do this in July
-
Mowing
Mow high, and not at all when the lawn is drought stressed.
OSU advises against mowing a drought-stressed lawn and suggests minimizing traffic on it. [1]
-
Grubs and weeds
Grubs are laying eggs.
OSU says July is egg-laying time for most Ohio grubs. Watering bluegrass heavily in July can increase grub problems, and OSU's masked chafer fact sheet notes that grub eggs need moisture, so cutting back irrigation in July and early August may significantly reduce survival. [5][6]
-
Watering
Water deeply when it wilts, or let it go dormant.
Kentucky bluegrass can withstand four to six weeks of drought by going dormant. OSU's fact sheet suggests half an inch of water every four to six weeks to keep dormant crowns alive; OSU's 2026 summer newsletter says most years a dormant lawn needs no extra water at all. [5][7]
